Dental Implants

Dental implants are titanium fixings shaped like screws which are surgically fixed into the jaw bone where there are missing teeth and they are restored in to give you fixed teeth or to support dentures.

They may be used in the following ways:

  • A crown is put on top of the implant to replace a single missing tooth. An implant used in this way has the advantage that it is fixed in permanently unlike a denture which is removable, and doesn’t require using the teeth on either side to support it like a bridge. The use of the teeth on either side of a gap either requires an adhesive bridge which can debond (come off), or the supporting teeth have to be cut down.
  • A bridge can be put on top of implants to replace more than one missing tooth. Implants used in this way can replace several missing teeth. This is normal practice and enables us to replace several missing teeth or even all your missing teeth with bridgework. Typically, we use 8 upper implants to replace all the teeth in the upper jaw and only 5 implants to replace all the missing teeth in the lower jaw. The reason for the difference in the number of implants required in the upper and lower jaw is due to the bone density.
  • Dentures can be attached to the implants using various attachments such as studs or bars. This enables us to make you an upper denture without the palate in a horse shoe shape allowing you to still have full use of your taste buds!! The denture is also more comfortable and fixes in better so that your diet can be unrestricted and theres no need to use fixatives. We typically use a minimum of 4 implants in the upper jaw although 6 implants are preferable. In the lower jaw the denture can also be made smaller and we need a minimum of 2 implants but preferably 4.

This lady was fitted with a single implant tooth replacement. She was particularly concerned that other teeth should not be used to support the missing tooth and wanted something that will very natural especially where it joins the gum as it showed alot when she smiles.

This lady had a retained milk tooth with the permanent tooth missing. When the milk tooth fell out the gap showed on smiling and she wanted the gap filled. I placed an implant restored it with a porcelain fused to metal crown. She wanted something that will look very natural where the tooth emerges from the gum as it showed when she smiled.

patient testimonials

"I was recommended to Dr Chawla through a friend of my husband. He was professional throughout my treatment and guided and advised me on all the stages of the treatment. I always felt very comfortable in his care even though some of the procedures were not pleasant. He was very patient and never rushed me, he allowed me to be in 'control' as well. I was extremely happy with the before and after pictures and it is sometimes difficult for my friends to spot the 'false' tooth as it blends in so well. I would recommend Dr Chawla to anyone as he is a professional person/dentist and has that 'edge' over other dentists I have been to in High Wycombe and always gives you reassurance. He is very kind and considerate throughout the procedures as well, asking whether you can feel any pain/discomfort."
